The theme of the 2018 Colour of Weather  Reception is:
“‎Listening as Part of an Effective Communication Strategy”

Recent trends in public and professional communications seem to be dominated by intolerant dismissiveness and/or outright silencing of voices of opposition, through direct sanctioning or intimidation.

These attitudes entrench barriers to progress and exacerbate confirmation-bias in a litany of situations.  Undertaking a listening strategy is important in the increasingly divisive environment that appears to characterize our Nation, and within STEM organizations currently.

AMS President Matthew “Matt” Parker felt strongly that communication is key to connecting current scientists with the next generation, across the diversity of cultures, generations, and perspectives.  The 17th Annual Colour of Weather (CoWx) will explore ways of active and engaged listening in celebration of Matt’s vision and legacy.

Please join us at the CoWx Reception for appetizers, expanding social networks, and exploring our commonalities across our perceived differences.  CoWx is an informal space where everyone can feel at home, and each participant is encouraged to meet someone new, that you might not otherwise know.

Students can seek advice and engagement from mentors from a variety of backgrounds, who are committed to a more expansive view of inclusion in the atmospheric sciences community.

All Are Welcome!  Colour of Weather was formed from an aspirational goal for greater inclusion and access of people from all backgrounds in the Geosciences. We do not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, or sexual orientation, in any of our activities or operations.

The event is co-sponsored by the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS); the Howard University Graduate Program in Atmospheric Sciences; the Penn State Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences; the University of Oklahoma School of Meteorology; the Department of Earth Sciences at Millersville University; and the Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS) Program at UCAR.
