Biography

Dr. Rivera earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez Campus in 2004. She received her Master of Science degree in Environmental Science in 2006 from the University of Texas at El Paso: her thesis “Detection and characterization of dust source areas in the Chihuahuan Desert, Southwestern North America” was awarded Best Master’s Thesis in Science or Engineering at UTEP for 2006. In 2012 she earned her Doctoral degree in Environmental Science and Engineering from UTEP too. Dr. Rivera has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards such as an Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) Scholarship and an Excellence Award from the ESE PhD Program in 2007-2010. While pursuing her degree, Dr. Rivera worked as a research assistant funded by the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Science, a consortium of universities including UTEP. She has presented her research at international conferences such as the VII International Conference on Aeolian Research (ICAR) held in Santa Rosa, La Pampa, Argentina, and annual meetings of the American Meteorological Society and American Geophysical Union. She has also published several papers in peer-reviewed journals including Atmospheric Environment and Journal of Maps.
