Benjamin Johnson entered the PhD program at the University of Maryland’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science in 2009, after completing an undergraduate degree, also at the University of Maryland, in Physics. He is currently supported by NCAS through his advisor Xin-Zhong Liang. He has completed his core coursework and has passed his written and oral comprehensive examinations. He has been using the Community Earth System Model (CESM) to study the role of mesoscale eddies in influencing salt budget and comparing their importance in the different ocean basins. In addition to his research Ben has served as an officer in AOSCGrads, the department’s graduate student organization and as a member of the department’s computer committee for two years.
