PhD/MS – Howard University

Brief Description

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is a vibrant and diverse department offering both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Sociology. We offer a variety of courses that give students comprehensive training in social theory, research methodology and statistics. In addition, the Department offers courses in Medical Sociology, Criminology and Social Inequality: Race/Ethnicity, Class, and Gender/Sexuality.

The graduate program reflects the historical context and today’s globalized world by examining the macrostructures and their influence on social institutions and everyday realities. A major focus of the program is the application of this analysis to issues of race, class and gender and to African Americans in particular.

In the Department, the Master of Arts (M.A.) program serves primarily as the first graduate degree for students seeking academic careers and high level social science positions in the public and private sectors. Such students usually undertake a course of study that leads to the Ph.D. degree. Students seeking careers in middle level social science positions in the government or private sectors may pursue the M.A. program as a terminal degree.
